Strawberry was not only a delicious fruit to be enjoyed,
because research showed the cream made from strawberry fruit could help protect
the skin from dangerous sun.
Scientists from Italy and Spain reveals
strawberry extract provides protection against ultraviolet radiation and reduce
skin damage caused by excessive sun exposure.
"We have verified the protective effect
that is owned by extracts of strawberries in the fight against skin cell damage
caused by ultraviolet rays," said study leader Maurizio Battino of
Politecnia Universita delle Marche, Italy, as quoted from Dailymail.
The study published in the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry said pigments called anthocyanins make strawberries
could have protective properties. It is hoped the findings could pave the way
in developing a cream made from strawberries.
"This compound has anti-inflammatory,
antioxidant and an important protector. Study was to evaluate the
bioavailability and bioactivity of anthocyanins in the dermis and epidermis of
human skin," says co-author Sara Tulipani of the University of Barcelona.
Researchers are preparing cell cultures from
human skin and strawberry extract was added with the concentration of 0.05 mg,
0.25 mg and 0.5 mg per milliliter. Then use a dose of ultraviolet light
equivalent to 90 minutes in the sun at midday summer.
The results obtained, especially the
strawberry extract concentration of 0.5 mg / ml is able to protect from UVA
radiation. It also increased cell survival and decreased DNA damage as compared
with cells that are not protected by the strawberry extract.
Ultraviolet rays can cause sunburn and
increase the risk of skin cancer. UVA rays penetrate deeper into layers of the
skin, while UVB rays are absorbed by the upper layers of the skin that causes
swelling, pain and redness.
